Charter School in Phoenix, Arizona

Children First Academy inspires the motivation to learn by engaging students as critical thinkers, problem solvers and active citizens; they strive to serve the whole child by providing hope, fostering strength and facilitating self-determination.

100 percent of the students and their families are at or below the poverty line and a vast majority of the students are homeless. There are approximately 350 students, grades K-9, being educated on its grounds. The school provides stability and hope for kids amid a chaotic world of homelessness and hopelessness; many of the children live in motels,shelters and many live doubled up . Children First Academy works to provide the necessities, care and attention that so many homeless and low socioeconomic children lack.

Children First Academy recognizes that educating children requires more than a classroom,desk and textbooks. We provide the following for our students and their families;

Transportation:

Our five buses travel over 450 miles a day; changing routes to accommodate the transitional lives of students’ families. This provides a consistent and stable environment for our kids.

Food & Clothing

Once a month, food boxes are given to families.

As a result of community donations, families receive hygiene kits, clothing, furniture and household items.

Social Services & Medical Care

A full-time counselor is on staff to work with individuals and groups of students. CFA-P also houses Sequoia Support Services, a behavioral health agency for Sequoia Charter Schools. Children and families are provided counseling services, individual, family and group. Parents are offered FREE parenting classes and support groups each Monday 4-6. "What makes the Edkey organization so unique is that we have so many different schools with all different approaches to educating students," she says. "But because we are consistent with our vision and mission, we can serve every student and always uphold our core values." In education, Becker found her passion and calling. "It was something I could do well," she explains, "and it made me feel complete when I was working with students."  more

More than 1,500 mayors across the country paid tribute to volunteers on Tuesday during the Mayor's Day of Recognition for National Service. In Phoenix, Vice Mayor Jim Waring read a proclamation honoring some 1,300 volunteers in the Phoenix area. He did it in front of 50 volunteers from the groups Americore and Seniorcore at the Children First Academy in south Phoenix. "Thank you for the service," Waring said. "Obviously, the city is in budget straits right now, and so we need some volunteers to step up and fill in some need."  more
