Charter School in Phoenix, Arizona

Children First Academy inspires the motivation to learn by engaging students as critical thinkers, problem solvers and active citizens; they strive to serve the whole child by providing hope, fostering strength and facilitating self-determination.

100 percent of the students and their families are at or below the poverty line and a vast majority of the students are homeless. There are approximately 350 students, grades K-9, being educated on its grounds. The school provides stability and hope for kids amid a chaotic world of homelessness and hopelessness; many of the children live in motels,shelters and many live doubled up . Children First Academy works to provide the necessities, care and attention that so many homeless and low socioeconomic children lack.

Children First Academy recognizes that educating children requires more than a classroom,desk and textbooks. We provide the following for our students and their families;

Our six buses travel over 450 miles a day; changing routes to accommodate the transitional lives of students’ families. This provides a consistent and stable environment for our kids.

All the kids at Children's First Academy come from impoverished homes. Most are homeless and considered at risk. So their view of the world is often limited. Kids in Focus helps them see the world from different perspectives. "Before I went to Kids in Focus, I never looked at things. Now, I actually see things that no one else can really see," Coleman said.   more

"It's necessary, so necessary to interact with these kids so they see the human behind the police badge," Johnson told me. Johnson participates in the Tempe Police Department's Adopt a School program, which allows officers to volunteer an hour a week at a specific school. This kind of volunteer work is especially necessary at Children First Academy, near Apache and McClintock. Most of the 230 children enrolled in the school are either homeless or in foster care. Many would have reasons to be distrustful of police.  more
